Practical Information, Rates, and Estimates
-
I write indexes for books. I am open to indexing
other material.
-
I can index locators as page numbers or
paragraph numbers.
-
I can submit the index as a Word or RTF document.
-
I use SKY Index Professional software.
-
I index from final pages or those in the final
proofreading stage (page numbers are set).
-
A two-week turnaround is sufficient for most
books (200-300 pages).
-
I index on a very part-time basis. I may be able
to accommodate indexing projects with short – or no – advance notice.
-
- The fee for each indexing project depends on the
complexity of the project.
-
Typical rates would begin at $3.50 per indexable
page for trade books and $4.50 for scholarly books.
-
Rates for other types of books may vary; some
may be less than stated above.
-
Some things that may increase the base rate: diacritics,
illustrations, many substantive notes that require indexing, a second (e.g.
name) index, and rush jobs.
-
Up to two hours of changes to the index after
it's turned in are free. After that, work on the index will be billed at $40
per hour, in quarter-hour increments.
-
- Please email me for an estimate or quote for
your project.
-
For the most accurate estimate of price and time,
please include a sample of your book, such as a chapter or 10-20 pages (not
from the beginning or end of the book).
-
Please include the estimated number of pages in
the book, the trim size, the number of pages/lines allowed for the index, when
the manuscript will be delivered to me, and the due date.
-
Please let me know if you have any concerns or special
requirements.
-
Index specifications (formatting, etc.) can be
discussed now or later.
